Before interviewing and selecting an interior designer, take time to clearly define the project that you have in mind. Knowing the answer to the following questions about your project will help ensure its success.

Room Use and Purpose:

What activities will occur here?

Who will use this room?

Atmosphere and Image:

What feeling do you want to create in this space?

Will this space project openness, warmth, tranquillity and comfort, casual or formal elegance, or functionality?

Budget:

Know how much you want to spend. Set priorities and guidelines in advance. Do all elements need to be "top of the line," or are some items more important than others?

Specifications:

Do your homework. Knowing these project details in advance can save you time and money. Make a record of your room sizes, walls lengths, window sizes, knooks and crannies, etc.

Completion:

When does the project need to be completed? Your designer will work with you to develop a reasonable timeline that all parties can work within.

A successful room design begins by selecting an interior designer who specializes in the type of environment you have in mind. One designer may have a flair for contemporary or modern design, another for creating a traditional or elegant look, and some designers are generalists.
